How to Shop Natural Products

As more and more consumers become aware of the risks associated with the chemicals in many personal care products, the market has been inundated with products that claim to be “natural.”

In this influx of natural products and gimmicks, we have some questions: What do these different labels mean? Whom can we trust?

Here are 3 tips to making wise personal product choices.

Understand the labels.

Labels are often confusing. Here are a few common terms and their meanings.

Paraben-free. Used as preservatives in many skin care products, parabens are associated with h cancer and other health problems.

PFAS-free. Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, also called PFAS, are chemicals that disrupt your hormones, affecting your sleep, blood pressure, metabolism, and more.

Phthalate-free. Phthalates are chemicals that can disrupt hormones.

Sulfate-free. Sulfates, also known as surfactants, are chemicals added to products to produce lather or foam.

Recognize the Bad Stuff

Besides knowing what the "good labels" are, learn to recognize some of the common harmful chemicals as well. Sometimes called the "dirty dozen," these substances can disrupt hormones, cause skin irritation, and pose long-term health risks.

These have been called the dirty dozen:

  1. BHA/BHT

  2. Coal Tar dyes

  3. DEA-related ingredients

  4. Dibutyl Phthalate

  5. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives

  6. Parabens

  7. Parfum

  8. PEG Compounds

  9. Petrolatum

  10. Siloxanes

  11. Sodium Laureth Sulfate

  12. Triclosan

Know the Source

Unfortunately, many of the labels on “natural” products are not regulated by the FDA. Sadly, this means that not all labels and companies can be trusted. It is crucial to research and understand the transparency and the kind of company behind the product.
