The Farmer's Letter: June 2024
Hello to all readers.
The farmers and their farm animals had a very pleasant experience this morning–a few showers overnight and temperatures about 8 degrees cooler.
The animals can tolerate the heat for a while, but after about 4 to 5 days, it catches up to them.
Did you know that 100% grass-fed animals can take to heat better because grain (especially corn) creates heat when digested?
The wind and sunshine are great for many things, but today, they are drying the hay that was cut this morning. We are hoping to get it baled on Tuesday or Wednesday and stack it in the barn for winter feeding.
We've had all kinds of new arrivals at the farm the past few weeks. One mamma pig had 13 babies, and another had 12, so we are richly blessed with piggies. We also had a few new baby cows. The farmers are grateful for them all.
It's the time of year when many farmers are harvesting wheat and barley crops. It makes us sad to see that almost all conventionally farmed wheat is sprayed with glyphosate to kill all growth and start drying evenly in the field, to reduce the cost of drying after harvest.
Sadly, this is at the cost of the one eating it. They expect humans to eat it and be okay with the chemicals that were sprayed on a few weeks before harvest.
We are committed to truly organic and chemical-free practices. Shop at Green Ridge Acres with freedom of mind–we don't sell anything that we would not feed our own families!
Mark your calendars!
Join us on Saturday, July 13, for the first-anniversary celebration of our new market.
Come enjoy a pig roast and vendor booths, and take the opportunity to meet some of our vendors in person. Bring your children to meet a few farm animals!
Watch for more details in the next email.
