Why Eat Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables?

3 Facts to Consider

Fact 1. Seasonal produce can’t be beat for freshness, flavor, and nutrition.

When we lose freshness, we also lose flavor and nutrition. Compare the juicy, garden-ripe tomatoes you find at your local farmers market in August to the hard, pinkish ones at your grocery store in January. The flavors are so different; they’re almost like two different fruits!

Long-distance shipping usually means the produce has been picked before it’s ripe. Sometimes it has been chemically treated for preservation. Fresh produce stored for long periods also loses its antioxidants and phytonutrients.

Buy flavor and nutrition. Buy seasonal!

Fact 2. Seasonal eating is environmentally friendly and can boost local economy.

When you shop for seasonal veggies, you will likely be buying locally as well. This has lots of benefits, from supporting the local economy to reducing our carbon footprint by requiring less shipping.

You might also be able to shop at a local farmers market and get to know the farmers–the real people behind your food production.

Fact 3. Seasonal eating supports your health.

When you eat seasonally, you give your body a healthy variety of nutrients from different foods.

Also, seasonal fruits and veggies often have seasonal benefits. For example, cool-weather foods like leafy greens, broccoli, and brussels sprouts are packed with vitamin C and are in season during the fall or early spring when your immune system may be weaker.

Summer fruits, like apricots and cantaloupes, are high in beta-carotene and help protect our skin against sun damage.
