The Farmer's Letter: October 2024
Hello friends,
We are blessed with beautiful fall weather, gorgeous sunsets, and even northern lights a few weeks ago.
This past Saturday, after the market, we headed north to our son's farm in Northumberland County. We saw some wonderful fall scenery on the way and also on Sunday morning as the sun came up over the mountains, shining on the next mountain. It made the leaves on the trees look so brilliant.
In the afternoon, we went for a 3 to 4-mile hike through the woods, and again, we could feast our eyes on God's handiwork.
At a few places along the trail, we came to clearings where we could see rolling farmland with mountains in the background. We had a very enjoyable time.
At our farm, the weather has turned dry, and we are wishing for rain. Due to the lack of rain, the pastures are quickly approaching the end of their growing season.
Most years, we are able to graze without supplementing hay till about mid-November. This year we had to begin supplementing about two months earlier, which cuts into our stockpile for winter use. But above all else, we still have it good, and we trust the Lord will send rain in his perfect timing.
At the market, we are so grateful for all our wonderful, loyal customers like you. You want to support the local, small-scale farmers who work hard to grow nutrient-rich food in a sustainable manner. You make it possible for the farmers to do what they love.
In the last few weeks, pastured, unwashed soy-free, corn-free eggs were in short supply, but it looks as though we are over the hump, and the new flock is starting to lay.
We are expecting an abundant supply of pullet eggs in the next few weeks. In case some of you are not familiar with pullet eggs, they are the first eggs from a new flock of chickens. They are smaller but very tasty.
You will also notice a lower price on some of our South Mountain Creamery products. Due to their higher volume of sales, they gave us better pricing, and we decided to pass some of the savings on to you.
Thank you for supporting us!
